One strategy is to keep an achievement journal that you can record your accomplishments. Second, maintain a fan club of supporters who are interested in what you are doing and are present to cheer you on. Third, develop a list of activities that can be accomplished in less than 30 minutes, less than 2 hours, and less than 4 hours. The next time you accomplish a milestone, choose to take set aside time on your celebration activity list before setting your sights on your next target. A metaphor for me of the importance of this activity comes from car journeys as a child. If the car isn’t getting fuel, the tank becomes empty and the car comes to a halt. By setting aside times for little breaks and celebrations along the way, we maintain our “fuel” and build our momentum for the longer term.

Warm regards

Beth Page

Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace

beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com

http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

Focus on talents and strengths – it’s about bringing your gifts to the world

Focus on talents and strengths – it’s about bringing your gifts to the world

I encourage you to reflect on your special gifts. Find ways of incorporating your gifts into your daily work and life. You are a precious being and the sharing of your gifts and talents is your way of giving back to the world around you. As Martha Graham writes in a letter to Agnes de Mille, because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique and if you block it, it will never exist through any medium and will be lost…the world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions…it is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” What unique gift of yours could you express more freely?

Warm regards

Beth Page

Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace

beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com

http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

How do I invite more joy into my life?

How do I invite more joy into my life?
I take life seriously, too seriously sometimes. Fortunately, I have friends, family and pets who help me laugh and remind me of what’s important in life. I need to remind myself of what’s important in life. Sometimes, it’s about the support I offered someone by listening to their concern. Sometimes, it’s as simple as admiring a beautiful day and the stars at night. Or it could be the joy of scheduling a day off as a special treat. The true secret to experiencing more joy is to choose it. Choosing more joy can be accomplished by focusing on being in the present moment. During the day, ask yourself, am I here, now, living in this moment? If the answer is No, take a deep breath and connect to your breathing and your body. This is a simple tool for bringing yourself into the “now,” and it begins with an awareness of your breath.

Warm regards

Beth Page

Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace

beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com

http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

When am I done?

When am I done?
My learning has been that if I want to maintain my motivation I must create many moments of “celebration.” I call these moments mini-milestones on the way to a big milestone. An exchange of our talents with another person will help us accomplish a project without spending financial resources. I help others, as my way of honoring and thanking the many people who have helped and continue to help me. Occasionally, I get to return the favor directly. Our actions support us on our path of self discovery and create forward momentum in reaching our goals. For example the steps we take can include doing some research, or simply picking up the phone and calling someone to ask for their assistance. If we look into our personal history, we generally see a series of little steps were taken that led to one big step. The time is always right to take a step forward on our path to leading our Plan A life. No, it doesn’t have to be the big one, it can be a baby step. Too often we limit ourselves to a short list of familiar options. This is an ideal opportunity to see if there are additional resources you could be considering, so take a few moments and make a list of resources you can access to help you achieve your plan. Then try and double the list. This is a time to access all the support available to you. When you have completed the list, review it with the following questions in mind. Is there anyone else who can support me? Are their government agencies who can offer additional resources? Did I include myself as a resource on my list? Are there professional resources that I can access to support me? Very few things are accomplished in life without the support of additional resources and people in our lives. Our past experiences offer us incredible insights into what “tools” work for us. Examine your past for insights on what strategies you have used to help you be successful.

One strategy that I have found helpful is the metaphor of swiss cheese. Swiss cheese has little holes in it, so like a piece of swiss cheese, I begin to take little “chunks” or steps towards my goal. This process of “chunking” takes the big activity and breaks it down into smaller more manageable chunks. I give myself permission to do one or two little things instead of tackling the big project and before I know it, I’m moving forward again. We should take some reflective time to ask ourselves what is blocking our progress. This is a useful tool for us to implement. Talking it over with someone and hearing ourselves think out loud is another option. Finally, we could start a journal and write out the story we are telling ourselves. If these three options encourage us to move forward we will start making choices and we will keep making choices. If we release the notion that each choice needs to be “perfect,” then we allow ourselves the freedom to learn from the experience of making choices and we get better and better at making good choices. For example, when we start an exercise program, we aren’t expected to have the fitness level of a fitness leader, however over time by exercising and engaging in proper nutrition, we expect to build up our capacity and our muscle strength. The same is true with making choices. The capacity and strength of making choices will increrase over time and through regular practice. Make a choice, then make another choice. The choice-making muscle is yours to develop.

Abundance and bliss,

Beth Page
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

What role does goal setting play?

What role does goal setting play?
Goal setting is vital when we are ready to execute our plan and take concrete steps towards living our best life. Setting goals offers us the steps to get us moving forward. Outlining these goals helps us identify where we are, where we want to be, and then they help us act and to move forward.

Begin by identifying one life goal you have set for yourself. Now identify the steps that will mark your forward momentum towards reaching that life goal. For example, if your life goal is to go into business for yourself, what are the steps that you can take today to begin to prepare yourself for achieving that life goal? Take an inventory of what steps need to be completed. Identify one step you can take today. In her book, The Dance, she offers us these words of support, “there is no way out but through.” As you go through the steps to plan for change, perhaps reminding yourself that there’s no way out but through will help you as you put one step in front of the other on your path forward to awakening the greatness within.

Warm regards,

Beth Page
Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
Take the coaching self assessment at: http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/self-test.htm
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

What’s my next step?

The next step is the easy step. Breathe. I have noticed in my life that whenever I am gearing up for change, I become a shallow breather. Breathing is an effortless way for us to reconnect to our core.

Over the next week, I invite you to tape a note near your workspace that says “breathe.” It will offer you a reminder to check in with yourself, to breathe and to encourage you to pay attention to your breathing.

The benefit of increasing the amount of oxygen to our system is immediate. The benefit of connecting to our core by intentionally breathing is priceless. By breathing with intention, you will also be offering yourself the gift of noticing what is happening in your body, perhaps you will notice sensations that you haven’t been aware of before. If so, pay attention. These are powerful sources of data as you plan for your next step.

Join me as we take one deep breath for ourselves…in and out. In the spirit of creating space in your life for having more of your wants and desires met, it’s necessary to begin saying “No” to those events that don’t support or nurture you. This boundary setting exercise can be uncomfortable to you and the people around you who may be accustomed to your consistent willingness to “help out.” However, if we don’t value your time enough to say “No” to those appointments and events that don’t nurture us, how can we ever hope to find time for the things that will introduce more joy and peace into our lives.

What are you going to say "No" to this week to create space for saying "Yes" to you?

Abundance and bliss,

Beth Page
Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

How do I start?

I am often asked by my clients, how do I start? This process begins by noticing what inspires you, what offers you joy and what makes your heart sing. Specifically, I suggest making notes of the instances in the week when you feel really great.

In taking notes, reflect on what was happening. What was it about the event or the instance that offered you joy, peace, or inspiration? Too often, we get caught up on what was happening at the moment and forget to focus on how it made us feel. The feelings are a way that your wise self invites you to pay attention.

This week I invite you to notice.

Warm regards

Beth Page
Contributing Expert Author to Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
Take the coaching self assessment at: http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/self-test.htm
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
http://www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com/

What self care?

One of the key sources of support we can offer ourselves in times of change, growth and transition is self care. Too often, as we are attempting to complete all of our activities and tasks in our day, we forget about the importance of taking care of ourselves.

Today I invite you to create space on your “doing” list for a little self care. Do you have a long list of unmet needs, or is the list short?

I invite you to make a list of unmet needs and spend the next couple of weeks identifying ways of getting those needs met. Your audit of unmet needs can include the following three questions:
1. Is this an important need for me right now?
2. What strategies have I used for getting this need met?
3. What creative options can I explore in the upcoming week to help me get this need met?

After conducting your audit, select your top 3-5 needs and see what progress you can make towards getting these needs met.

Surprisingly, often these unmet needs have never been expressed. When we begin to manifest the shifts inside with behaviour change outside, people notice.

I invite you to take a few steps as you begin to make changes in your life. When people notice, complete the following three step process.
1. Invite them to support you in your change.
2. Be specific about the support that you would find helpful.
3. Recognize and acknowledge the support when it’s offered.

People in your life will appreciate you including them in your change. I also encourage you to recognize yourself in this process. Your most valuable source of support is your support for yourself. Be your own most encouraging cheerleader in this process – it’s the greatest, single most loving gift you can offer yourself.

Warm regards,

Beth Page
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

How do I involve others in my transition?

Your first step as you begin to move forward in your transition is to conduct an audit of who is currently present in your life and begin to identify the ways that they might support you.

Perhaps you need 30 minutes of reflection time each day, or help cooking a meal, or for someone to take on the bill paying responsibilities in the household, or a listening and supportive ear as you give a voice to self doubt and the challenges you are experiencing.

After you have examined the people that are around you and the types of help that would make a difference for you, consider approaching people to ask if they could help you with this one activity. I invite you to be specific about what you need, for how long, and how this help will allow you to move forward. Let the person know how much you would appreciate their support and help and ensure that the person is willing to assume the responsibility you are seeking to share.

At the end of this process, there may be a few gaps. This is the time for creativity. What’s missing? What are some other creative ways of getting the task accomplished? Does it really need to be done? Can a barter arrangement be made with another friend to help them with something in exchange for assistance with your project? Explore, explore, explore. What are the strategies for moving through these periods? There are a number of options. First, breathe deeply. The tendency when we become focused on what’s not working is to become a shallow breather. Breathing deeply allows us to re-connect with the essence of our core in a very simple and powerful way.

We can offer ourselves the gift of surrendering in the moment. This does not mean pulling out a white flag and giving up. It means acknowledging in this moment that we need to lean into what is happening rather than struggle against it. Pause for a moment or two and reflect on what’s happening and the alternative options and possibilities that exist for defining the situation. Are there some key lessons that can be taken from the experience?

Finally, we can realize that not all things are within our control. Often we think of decisions as being right or wrong. Marsha Sinetar, the author of, “Do What you Love, the Money Will Follow, once described the image of a sailboat moving from point A to a future point on the horizon. She described the sailboat as tacking first to the left and then to the right. The sailboat did not move in a straight line to its destination. The same is true for moving forward on our dream path. We may think we are making right and wrong choices, but if we reflect on the image of the sailboat, we are actually making right and left choices to help us navigate our path forward to our ultimate goal.

Warm regards,

Beth
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

How do I deal with the losses? What do I do with the endings?

William Bridges in his book, “Managing Transitions” offers us the perspective that there are no new beginnings without endings. What endings are necessary for you as you seek to create space for new beginnings?

One of the key gifts we can offer ourselves when we are experiencing an “ending” in our life is to grieve the ending. Too often, in the push forward, we forget to reflect on what an ending means to us. We benefit from taking some time to honour ourselves and the ending. What change is the ending bringing about for us? What was the gift from the experience? What is necessary in order for us to move on in a way that honours us? Allowing some time for self-reflection, for grieving and for closure will allow us to truly release the ending and look towards the new beginning we wish to create for ourselves.

Warm regards

Beth
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
Author of Done Deal: Your Guide to Merger and Acquisition Integration
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dreamcatcher-consulting.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-do-i-deal-with-losses-what-do-i-do.html' title='How do I deal with the losses? As we descend into the scarcity spiral, we are more and more aware of how limited a specific resources is, such as money or time. The focus on scarcity leaves us feeling less and less empowered to address our concerns.

What can you do when you are experiencing the scarcity spiral? Step by step, re-focus your energy on what you have. For example, if time is prompting the feeling of scarcity, begin by focusing on this present moment. Notice how this moment is whole and complete as it is. Perhaps in this moment, you may have a brief experience of tranquility.
At the opposite end of the scarcity spectrum there is abundance. Several tools we can use to shift our perspective include: noticing we are focused on issues of scarcity; challenging the assumptions that are placing us in the scarcity spiral; paying attention to the present moments and identifying actions we can take today to help us shift from scarcity to abundance.

Warm regards

Beth
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
Author of Done Deal: Your Guide to Merger and Acquisition Integration
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

If you are not willing to risk “losing,” you lose yourself

Fritz Kunkl identified four fatal fears; the fear of rejection, the fear of losing, the fear of emotional discomfort, and finally the fear of being wrong. When we are dreaming a new dream for our selves, we have to be willing to approach new activities with a sense of adventure.

If we are consumed with doing it “right” we limit the possibilities for our success. There are many routes to take to achieve your goal. Finding out what doesn’t work can be the first step to finding the best path for you and your dream. When Edison was asked how it felt to have failed 2,000 times to make a light bulb, his response was I haven’t failed. I now know 2,000 ways not to make light. We all know the end result of Edison’s experiments, all you have to do is turn on a light this evening to be reminded of Edison’s dream. Our competency increases with a new activity each time we try something new. Perhaps all we need to do is re-define our definition of “losing, wrong, and failure” and focus instead on the learning outcomes that have come from each attempt. What have we learned about ourselves? What have we learned about our dream? These are the real gifts as we move forward in our lives.

Warm regards

Beth
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

When do you give your power away?

What are the sources of power within you and when are you most aware of giving your source of power away? We all have instances in our lives when we are “triggered” and the net result is that we give our power away to others. It can be prompted by an interaction with a difficult colleague, supervisor, family member or acquaintance. When are you aware of giving your power away?

Give yourself the gift of becoming aware of those instances when you are giving your power away by reflecting on the triggers. If you select a few instances when you are aware of being silent, not giving a voice to your wishes, or letting someone else dominate the agenda, ask yourself, what was happening to you internally at the time. What was the message you were giving yourself? The self awareness that you offer through this reflection may help you create space for honoring both you and the other person in your next conversation.

Warm regards

Beth
Contributing Expert Author to, Awakening the Workplace, Now Available
beth@dreamcatcher-consulting.com
www.dreamcatcher-consulting.com

How do I move beyond either/or choices?

How do I move beyond either/or choices?
Either/or choices and either/or thinking cause us difficulty. When starting feels like a challenge, I suggest using the swiss cheese approach. Unlike a solid block of cheese, swiss cheese has lots of holes in it. As you begin a project, break it into small chunks and tackle one chunk at a time.

So, when you ask yourself, what can I begin today, give some consideration to the swiss cheese approach and identify one thing that you can do today. The strategy is to take the “big thing” that you are wanting to tackle, break it down into small chunks or activites that would take about 20-30 minutes to complete, and then work on one chunk.

May the swiss cheese approach help you begin today.

Warm regards

Beth
Subscribe to Dreamcatchers, a free monthly newsletter, dedicated to Awakening the Greatness Within. I recall feeling privileged to be invited on such a deeply personal quest, and the question How do I catch my Dream is a question that prompts a question. The question is: What’s the dream you want to catch? Catching a dream involves an in-depth process; a process of discovery, a process of self -reflection, and of self awareness. Catching a dream also involves concentrated planning, creating a supportive environment, removing obstacles, and taking action. Over the next several weeks, we’ll be examining each of these areas to help you catch your dream.

I invite you to capture your moments of happiness over the next week. When are those times that you feel joy, bliss, or peace within you? Write down the moment with as much detail as you can.
